Diary
Of
Joseph Wiley Havens Nebeker
1913-1914
{This is the only diary known to have been kept by Wiley Nebeker. At this point in his life he was married and had four children. The family was living in Upper Perry, Oregon, where Wiley worked as the foreman of the Horse Barn for the Stoddard & Nibley Lumber Company—a sawmill located in Perry. At that time the logging was done with teams of horses and Wiley, known as an excellent horseman, was hired to oversee the maintenance and care of these valuable animals. At this time most of the logging was being performed at a logging camp near Hilgard and the logs were then floated down the river to the sawmill at Perry. There was also a planer and a box factory associated with the sawmill. Additionally, Wiley worked at a side job delivering meat around Perry for the local butcher shop. There was no LDS church located in Perry. The closest church was down in LaGrande about 4 miles by horse and buggy.}

{This is the end of the only diary we have for Joseph Wiley Nebeker. Presumably his work picked up with the improving spring weather but we are left to speculate on that. Just six months later, on Sept. 15, 1914, Wiley and Nellie had their fifth child, Very Leroy Nebeker, born while still living in Upper Perry. However, due to their daughter, Ida, getting pneumonia in the following winter, they left this job and home in the spring of 1915 and bought a farm in Mt. Glen, Oregon, where Wiley lived and prospered in this little settlement. There he was called and ordained to be a Seventy in the Union Stake, and later, he served as the second counselor to Bishop Edward D. Whiting. He was only able to live here though for about five years, as he died there in September of 1920.}
